Well that was fun! Haven’t had that playoff intensity since 2011 and it was worth the wait.

I started out open minded and hopeful for what was to come. This calm didn’t last long.

By the end of that second round I was stressed out, superstitiously picking which Canuck hat to wear and deliberating over what part of the couch was luckier (it was the left side).

I’d like to thank Meghan for consistently putting both kids to bed, every second night - while I paced around the basement watching the games.

Went Down A Stats & History of Vancouver Rabbit Hole

Still reeling from the Canucks getting booted out of the playoffs I turned to YouTube to distract me and the algorithm tossed me this gem. Turns out the creator has a shop on Commercial Drive and sells charts and posters out of a nondescript building.

Very interesting overview of the First Nations camps, how the water ways have changed over time and the curious decisions made that formed the boundaries of what we know as modern Vancouver.

Then came across this post on Reddit outlining the changes in population based off the 2023 census. “Fun” Facts:

• Using the 2021 and 2016 data as reference, the increase in population between 2021 and 2023  was almost double the population increase between 2016 and 2021.

• Surrey is getting very close to over taking Vancouver in population.

• UBC has a larger population than Pitt Meadows.

• Given the data is from 2023 - we may have crested over the 3 million person mark already!

Also learned this: Under the BC Police Act, municipalities with a census population below 5,000 only have to pay 30% of policing costs. Once they reach over 5,000 they have to pay 70%. For Bowen Island, this would represent a jump from paying $715,000 to ~$1,400,000, which is about a ~20% property tax increase. The island has something like twelve different development projects going, all in various stages, which will certainly throw them over the line.

…Man I wish the Canucks had made the next round…
