March 31st is the deadline to claim your exemption for BC’s Speculation and Vacancy Tax. The Government should have sent a letter with a declaration code & letter ID back in January. And if you’re like me - you promptly forgot about it until now.
So grab that letter, get your SIN number and head over to: gov.bc.ca/spectax OR call: 1-833-554-2323 to get that done before the end of the month.
Spring approaches and the garden centre is calling me. But it’s still too cold so why not catch up with Monty Don and the crew at BBC’s Gardeners’ World. Now any die-hard Monty-Maniacs (Meghan and Me…) will know the shows on hiatus for the winter break - but they put out 30 episodes a year all over an hour long so catching up is near impossible.
Now here are some tips to help you avoid the mistakes I habitually make year after year. I’m sure the garden centre doesn’t mind my annual donation but I’d like some things to survive my blackish thumb this year.
Tip #1: Annuals Vs Perennials
I always forget this one… The difference between perennials and annuals is simple—perennials are plants that will come back and regrow year after year, while annuals die off when temperatures get too cold and require you to plant new plants the following spring.
Tip #2: Growing Zones!
Buy plants that will thrive in our growing zones will ensure they will survive the winter outdoors. Stick to plants in the “8” range OR plan to bring them indoors over the winter.
Tip #3: Last & First Frosts in BC
I’m guilty of this one on more than a few occasions. I drop large at the garden centre and plant them outdoors way too early only to have a night time low temperature come and wipe out my little fledgling plants. See the chart below? No moving plants back outside until the end of March and don’t put anything new in the ground before then either.
Now it’s probably not too early to start planting seeds. Check out Lee Valley’s guide below (click the image). This year I’m going to take on growing more strawberry varieties and some heirloom tomatoes.
Something Funny Before You Go:
My wife texted me “Your great” and I replied “No, you’re great”. She’s been happy and smiling at me all weekend but I just corrected her grammar. Don’t need to be so excited.
Daylight Savings!
Don’t forget to turn those few remaining appliances and analogue clocks back on March 10th.
And for those of you with small children - I wish you luck…
Referral & Gratitude
I’m extremely grateful to have such amazing and “Loyal” clients who recommend me to their Family, Friends and Colleagues on a regular basis! There is truly no higher compliment.
Also, if you haven’t had a change yet I’m trying to bulk up me Google Reviews. Happy to reciprocate in kind too!
Curious what I’m up to? Voyeurism via Social Media is the key!
