DEALT WITH THIS: Kids school burning down…

Early in the morning on Oct 14th our daughters future school burned down. Arson is suspected. The building itself was old and didn’t have a sprinkler system of any kind so the fire was able to move through the school swiftly. Our daughters were attending daycare on the same grounds and their portable was spared but they’ve been moved to another site for the time being.

The regular school kids are being bused to a repurposed building in Coquitlam that will function as a temporary school for the time being.

Everyone is fine - no one was hurt. But the fact it is suspected to be arson has my mind reeling. There’s someone out there that did this on purpose and I worry they may never face any repercussions for it either.

I made life long friends at my elementary school - that location, that building, that community all played a part. All these things will occur for our crew - I’ll just be different from what we planned.

DOUBLE CHECKED THESE: Fire Extinguishers

Somewhat ironically our neighbourhood elementary school burned down at the end of Fire Prevention Week. That has lead me to double check our own fire preparedness and I beg you to do the same:

• Fire & CO Detectors: Are the batteries good? Are the wired ones functioning?

• Escape Ladder: We have a collapsable escape ladder stored in a hall closet - should escape through the main house be blocked.

• Fire Extinguishers: Double check they’re still working. If you don’t have one look for a class “ABC” model this will cover Paper, wood, liquids, gasses. If you can find a Class F they’re ideal for cooking oils.

• Other Things to Consider: Condo - Where is the fire escape stairs & alarm pulls? Detached Home - Are your house numbers legible? Where is a safe meeting spot?

  
  

Prices will vary for the products mentioned above but for a few hundred dollars you can be prepared for the worst.
